Thailand Considers Ceasefire Possibility with Cambodia Following ASEAN Meeting

Thailand has not ruled out the possibility of a ceasefire with Cambodia after a special ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting in Kuala Lumpur, while emphasizing the need for Cambodia to demonstrate goodwill first.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the Thai government stated in a release that Bangkok does not dismiss the potential for a ceasefire with Cambodia following a special meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers in Kuala Lumpur. The Thai government emphasized that Cambodia, as the initiator of the conflict, must first clearly demonstrate sincerity and goodwill toward achieving a truce.

Thailand reiterated its long-standing commitment to genuine and lasting peace, stressing that sustainable peace must ensure the security and safety of citizens. Bangkok has called for Cambodia to prove its sincerity to facilitate dialogue on de-escalating tensions along the border.

The special ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting is scheduled for Monday, December 22, in Kuala Lumpur. Border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia, which began on December 7, escalated on December 8 when the Thai air force targeted Cambodian military infrastructure. Both sides accuse each other of initiating hostilities and attacking civilians. Diplomatic efforts by the U.S., China, and Malaysia to broker a ceasefire have so far been unsuccessful, with fighting continuing.

The border conflict, involving tanks, drones, and artillery, has claimed at least 19 lives in Cambodia and 22 in Thailand.
