Iraq’s National Political Council Fails to Agree on Parliament Speaker Candidate

A meeting of Iraq’s National Political Council ended without consensus on a candidate for parliament speaker, with divisions emerging over the nomination process ahead of a decisive session scheduled for Tuesday.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, prominent Iraqi Sunni politician Mashaan al-Jubouri revealed in a social media post that last night’s National Political Council meeting concluded without agreement on a candidate for the parliament speaker position. The session, held at the residence of Thabit al-Abbasi, head of the al-Hasm al-Watani coalition, saw heated debates over nomination protocols.

Al-Jubouri reported that Mohammed al-Halbousi, leader of the Taqaddom Party, insisted on being the sole candidate for the speakership, contrary to prior agreements about fielding two nominees. The political figure predicted al-Halbousi would likely appoint a substitute, recognizing his likely defeat against potential rival Muthanna al-Samarrai in any direct contest.

Meanwhile, informed sources told Al-Sumaria News that council members reached consensus on supporting al-Samarrai’s candidacy during Monday’s meeting at Sheikh Thabit al-Abbasi’s home. The sources noted this decision came as preparations intensify for parliament’s inaugural session on December 29.

Despite being aware of domestic and international objections to his re-election, al-Halbousi reportedly maintained his stance during the council discussions. The National Political Council of Sunni parties plans to hold a decisive meeting Tuesday at the residence of Ahmed Abdullah al-Jubouri (Abu Mazen), secretary-general of the al-Jamahir al-Wataniyah Party, to finalize their candidate selection.
