Russia Criticizes UN Security Council Meeting on Iran as Untimely Amidst Military Tensions

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the United Nations Security Council has convened a session on Iran, sparking criticism from Russia’s representative, Vasily Nebenzya. He rebuked Slovenia’s envoy, the current rotating president of the council, for organizing a meeting on a resolution (2231) that expired on October 18, 2025, marking the tenth anniversary of the JCPOA. Nebenzya argued that such actions diminish the council’s authority.
Nebenzya stated that military actions cannot halt Iran’s nuclear program, emphasizing that five rounds of indirect talks between Iran and the U.S. had taken place before Iran was attacked ahead of the sixth session. He rejected attempts by European and American representatives to frame the meeting as a routine review of Resolution 2231’s sanctions and the UN Secretary-General’s report, calling the approach politically motivated.
Iran has repeatedly expressed readiness for fair negotiations, and Nebenzya urged all parties to avoid provocative measures that could heighten tensions.
