Yemen’s Saudi-Backed Council Requests Coalition Support Against UAE-Backed Forces in Hadramout

The Saudi-backed Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council has called on the Saudi-led coalition to protect civilians in Hadramout and support mediation efforts, as tensions escalate between UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council forces and Riyadh-aligned groups.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, a senior official in Yemen’s internationally recognized government, known as the Presidential Leadership Council, stated that its chairman has requested Saudi-led coalition intervention to safeguard civilians in the eastern Hadramout province. Rashad al-Alimi, the head of the Saudi-backed council, also urged the coalition to support its affiliated armed forces in protecting joint Saudi-Emirati mediation efforts.

The source emphasized that recent escalations by the UAE-supported Southern Transitional Council in Hadramout and Al-Mahra provinces violate agreed frameworks and challenge the authority of Yemen’s legitimate government. “The Southern Transitional Council’s provocative actions have undermined Saudi and Emirati mediation attempts,” the official added.

Hadramout and Al-Mahra have recently become focal points of competition between UAE- and Saudi-backed forces. The Emirati-supported Southern Transitional Council has taken control of oil-rich areas, prompting Saudi Arabia to demand their withdrawal and de-escalation. These developments highlight growing fractures within the anti-Yemen coalition and intensifying regional rivalries in southern and eastern Yemen.

Formed in 2017 with direct UAE support, the Southern Transitional Council has maintained deep disagreements with the Saudi-backed Yemeni government, leading to repeated armed clashes in Aden and other southern regions. As Saudi Arabia has reduced its direct military role in Yemen amid growing Riyadh-Abu Dhabi disagreements, the Transitional Council has emerged as the dominant power in southern Yemen.
