Trump Expresses Optimism About Ending Ukraine War Ahead of Zelensky Meeting

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, U.S. President Donald Trump, in an interview with the New York Post, discussed the prospects for successful peace negotiations regarding Ukraine. “I think there’s a good chance for success in the talks. I’ve resolved eight wars, and this is the toughest one. I believe we can end this war too,” Trump said.
The New York Post reported that the American president remains optimistic about reaching a peace agreement during his upcoming meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday.
Trump believes both Russia and Ukraine are interested in ending the conflict, stating, “I think the Ukrainians want to do it, and I think Russia does too. But every time one side wants it, the other doesn’t.”
Zelensky unveiled his 20-point peace plan with Russia on December 24, 2025, which continues to emphasize no retreat from Donbas and Ukraine’s right to maintain an 800,000-strong military.
Sergei Ryabkov, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, stated that Zelensky’s plan fundamentally differs from the 27-point proposal Russia has discussed with American counterparts since early December.
