Somaliland Seeks Stronger Ties with Israel Amid Diplomatic Recognition

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the breakaway region of Somaliland has announced its intention to strengthen relations with Israel, praising the latter’s decision to formally recognize its sovereignty. In a statement, Somaliland’s separatist group emphasized mutual respect, friendship, and shared values as the foundation for expanded cooperation across various sectors.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar confirmed on Friday that Israel and Somaliland have signed an agreement to establish full diplomatic relations, including the exchange of ambassadors and the establishment of embassies. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a video call with Somaliland’s separatist leader Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, invited him to visit the occupied territories, describing the agreement as a significant opportunity to enhance bilateral ties.
The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office stated that the agreement with Somaliland falls under the framework of the Abraham Accords. Earlier reports from Israeli media suggested Somaliland was being considered as a potential relocation site for Palestinians from Gaza.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has not been recognized by any United Nations member state. The breakaway administration controls the northern region of Somalia.
