Somalia Calls for Arab League Emergency Meeting Over Israel’s Controversial Move

Somalia has requested an urgent Arab League session in response to Israel’s diplomatic engagement with Somaliland, which Mogadishu condemns as a violation of its territorial integrity.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Somalia‘s ambassador to Egypt announced that the country is demanding an extraordinary Arab League meeting to address Israel’s controversial recognition of Somaliland. The Somali government has rejected what it calls an illegal act by Israel, asserting that Somaliland remains an inseparable part of its sovereign territory.

On Friday, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar revealed that Israel and Somaliland had signed an agreement to establish full diplomatic relations, including the exchange of ambassadors and opening of embassies. This development follows Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s video conference invitation to Somaliland separatist leader Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi to visit occupied Palestinian territories.

Somali authorities reiterated their firm stance against any deliberate attack on their sovereignty, particularly Israel’s move to recognize northern Somalia as independent. Media reports from the occupying regime had previously suggested Somaliland as a potential relocation site for Gazan Palestinians under controversial resettlement plans.

Somaliland separatists declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but have not gained recognition from any United Nations member state. The breakaway region continues to control northern Somalia despite Mogadishu’s consistent claims of sovereignty over the territory.
