Qatar Condemns Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland, Urges Gaza War Ceasefire

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Qatar‘s Foreign Ministry issued a statement today condemning Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, emphasizing its rejection of any parallel entities that undermine Somalia’s sovereignty. The ministry urged Israel to halt its military campaign in Gaza and recognize Palestinian statehood instead.
The statement followed an announcement by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar confirming a diplomatic agreement with Somaliland, including mutual embassy openings. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu invited Somaliland’s separatist leader Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi to visit occupied territories during a video call, framing the deal as an expansion of cooperation under the Abraham Accords.
Israeli media had previously suggested Somaliland as a potential relocation site for Gazan Palestinians. Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but remains unrecognized by UN member states.
