Taliban Seeks Expanded Relations with the United States

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Afghanistan’s acting Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi held talks with former U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad in Kabul, emphasizing the potential for expanded relations between the two countries. Muttaqi stated that following the withdrawal of foreign forces and the end of the war, Afghanistan-U.S. relations have entered a new phase, with opportunities for cooperation in various sectors.
During the meeting, both sides discussed ways to strengthen bilateral ties, as well as the challenges and opportunities ahead. Khalilzad praised the Taliban-led government’s efforts in ensuring security and reconstruction in Afghanistan.
German broadcaster Deutsche Welle reported that the purpose of the U.S. delegation’s visit to Kabul on Sunday was to discuss prisoner exchanges. The outlet noted that Khalilzad had previously traveled to Kabul on December 13, accompanied by Adam Boehler, then-U.S. President Donald Trump’s special representative for hostage affairs.
