Gaza Red Crescent Warns of Contaminated Drinking Water Amid Infrastructure Collapse

The Palestinian Red Crescent in Gaza reports that 80% of water networks have been destroyed in recent conflicts, forcing families to rely on contaminated water sources linked to gastrointestinal diseases, with infectious illnesses spreading rapidly among children due to overcrowding and poor sanitation.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Bashar Murad, Health Program Director of the Palestinian Red Crescent in Gaza, warned that approximately 80% of water supply networks were destroyed during recent hostilities. This has compelled many families to use transported water, which laboratory tests confirm contains viruses and bacteria causing gastrointestinal diseases.

Murad added that various areas of Gaza are witnessing a surge in infectious gastrointestinal diseases and influenza, particularly among children, exacerbated by overcrowding, extreme cold, and environmental pollution.

He emphasized that the Red Crescent had developed a preventive plan before the recent storm system to support vulnerable groups with emergency aid. However, he noted that current assistance remains far below the minimum needs of Gaza’s affected population.
