Record-Breaking Heatwave Grips Uruguay and Argentina Ahead of New Year

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the first severe summer heatwave has plunged Uruguay and Argentina into a critical situation as 2025 draws to a close. Meteorological organizations warn that the heat will intensify on Tuesday and Wednesday, the year’s final days.
The Metsul Institute reports recent temperatures reaching 36.4°C in Buenos Aires and over 37°C in Uruguayan cities like Durazno and Florida. Forecasts predict thermometers will register 35-40°C in Montevideo and central/southern Uruguay on December 30-31.
Argentina’s National Meteorological Service has issued yellow alerts for eight provinces and Buenos Aires metropolitan area. Health authorities have issued serious warnings about the extreme heat’s dangers for vulnerable groups including children, seniors over 65, and chronic patients.
Beyond human risks, the heatwave brings concerns about wildfires, water shortages, agricultural impacts, and concurrent weather phenomena like storms, severe lightning, and hail. Officials urge citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during peak heat hours and follow safety guidelines against heatstroke.
The heat mass is expected to persist through early January 2026.
