China Condemns Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland, Cites Threat to One-China Policy

China has strongly opposed Israel’s formal recognition of Somaliland as an independent state, warning that the move undermines its One-China policy and Belt and Road Initiative.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, China‘s Foreign Ministry has vehemently rejected Israel’s official recognition of Somaliland as an independent country, calling it a direct challenge to Beijing’s sovereignty claims over Taiwan. The English-language analytical news outlet Modern Diplomacy reported that Chinese intelligence and military agencies are fully aware of the strategic implications of Israel’s actions, which they believe could weaken China’s Belt and Road Initiative aimed at reviving the historic Silk Road.

Modern Diplomacy further stated that China views Somaliland’s alignment with Taiwanese separatists as a direct threat to its One-China principle. In response, Beijing is reportedly establishing satellite stations in Somalia to enhance its intelligence-gathering capabilities and monitor military and diplomatic activities by rival powers, particularly Israel, the United States, and their allies in the region.

The European-based news platform highlighted China’s concerns over Israel’s cooperation with Taiwanese separatists in missile defense systems. It noted that China is actively working to strengthen its presence in the Horn of Africa, with Beijing-based think tanks developing long-term strategies to counter China’s rivals in Somalia and the broader region.

Modern Diplomacy characterized China’s efforts to expand relations with Somalia as part of its strategy to counter what it sees as provocative actions by Israel in the Horn of Africa.
