Russia Vows to Block Revival of Previous Sanctions Mechanism Against Iran at UN Security Council

Russia’s permanent representative to the OSCE, Dmitry Polyanskiy, stated that Moscow will prevent the reimposition of sanctions on Iran, arguing that European Troika nations have lost the right to trigger the ‘snapback’ mechanism under the 2015 nuclear deal.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Russia has declared its intention to block any attempt to reinstate previous sanctions against Iran at the United Nations Security Council. Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia’s permanent representative to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), stated in an interview with TASS news agency that the European Troika—comprising the UK, Germany, and France—has forfeited its right to invoke the ‘snapback’ sanctions under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Polyanskiy emphasized that, as of September 18, 2025, the relevant resolution has expired for Russia and its allies. Consequently, Moscow will oppose any efforts to restore pre-2015 sanctions mechanisms against Iran, which were nullified by UN Security Council Resolution 2231.
