Russia Rejects European Union’s Draft Peace Plan for Ukraine

Russia has dismissed a European Union-proposed peace plan for Ukraine, deeming it ‘unconstructive and unsuitable’ after a preliminary review, while the U.S. and Ukraine discuss Washington’s alternative proposal.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian President, stated that Moscow is aware of the European Union’s peace proposal for Ukraine but found it ‘completely unconstructive and unsuitable’ upon initial examination. Ushakov remarked, ‘This morning, we became aware of a European proposal, which, upon preliminary review, appeared entirely unconstructive and inappropriate.’

Meanwhile, the U.S. and Ukraine held talks in Miami on Sunday regarding Washington’s 28-point peace plan. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the meeting as the ‘most effective’ negotiation since the crisis began.

Western media reports indicate that the initial U.S. draft proposal includes Ukraine’s withdrawal from NATO, recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimea and Donbas, the retreat of Ukrainian forces from the Donetsk People’s Republic, official recognition of the Russian language in Ukraine, limitations on Ukraine’s armed forces, and the lifting of anti-Russian sanctions.

European Union leaders opposed the U.S. peace plan, prompting Germany, France, and the UK to present their own draft, which permits Ukraine’s NATO membership, the deployment of NATO forces on Ukrainian soil, and the establishment of an 800,000-strong peacetime army.
