UN Calls for Investigation into Attack on Civilians in Kherson

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has called for an investigation into the January 1 attack on the village of Khorly in the Russian-controlled region of Kherson. The OHCHR expressed deep concern over reports of the New Year’s Eve strike, which resulted in civilian casualties, including children.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, the OHCHR criticized the attack for potential violations of international humanitarian law. The UN body urged a prompt, impartial, and effective investigation into the incident.
Gennady Gatilov, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN in Geneva, accused Ukraine’s military of committing a terrorist act in Kherson Oblast, which he said claimed 24 civilian lives. Gatilov called on Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, to swiftly condemn the attack. He warned that ignoring this tragedy would amount to complicity in the crimes of Ukrainian neo-Nazis.
The Russian diplomat alleged that Kyiv’s primary objective is to cling to power by any means, divert public attention from Ukrainian military failures on the battlefield, and undermine peaceful conflict resolution efforts.
Tensions between Russia and Ukraine have escalated following Ukraine’s reported drone attack on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residence, which Ukraine has denied responsibility for, along with the New Year’s attack on Kherson.
