Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro Being Transferred to New York for Federal Trial

Nicolas Maduro, the President of Venezuela, is being transferred to New York to face federal charges, according to CNN, while Venezuelan officials condemn the operation as a violation of international law.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, CNN reported, citing informed sources, that a team of FBI agents accompanied U.S. special operations forces during the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Plans are now underway to transfer Maduro to New York, where he will stand trial in Manhattan federal court.

CNN’s report indicates that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has been building cases against Maduro for years, and these cases are expected to be used in court proceedings against him.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi previously stated that Maduro would soon face severe penalties in American courts following his arrest in Venezuela.

Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek Saab condemned the abduction of the country’s president and demanded his release. Saab declared that the U.S. government is responsible for the safety of Maduro and his wife, calling on Venezuelan officials to document widespread human rights violations during the U.S. operation. He also urged the United Nations and human rights organizations to intervene directly.

Saab questioned the silence of international human rights bodies, asking, “Where are the international human rights institutions that should react to this cowardly operation, which has taken innocent lives and kidnapped the president and his wife?”

Caracas has accused Washington of attempting to install a puppet government and gain control over Venezuela’s oil resources. Several countries have condemned the U.S. action, calling it a violation of the U.N. Charter and international law.
