Saudi-Backed Forces Advance in Eastern Yemen Amid Shifting Alliances

Yemen’s Saudi-aligned ‘Shield of the Homeland’ forces have seized key military positions in Hadhramaut, as tensions escalate between Saudi Arabia and the UAE over influence in southern Yemen.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Saudi-backed forces in Yemen have achieved significant territorial gains in the eastern province of Hadhramaut, further complicating the power dynamics in the war-torn country. The so-called ‘Shield of the Homeland’ forces, aligned with Saudi Arabia, successfully reclaimed strategic military and security positions, according to the head of Yemen’s Saudi-supported Leadership Council.

The official stated that preparations are underway to transfer control of government institutions in Al-Mahra province to the Shield of the Homeland forces. He also called on the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council to commit to dialogue and refrain from unilateral actions.

Meanwhile, the Emirati-supported Southern Transitional Council, which had previously made advances in eastern Yemen before being pushed back by Saudi forces, welcomed Riyadh’s invitation for talks about southern Yemen. On Friday, Saudi-aligned forces took control of Seiyun, the administrative and military center of Hadhramaut, forcing Emirati-backed forces to retreat toward coastal areas.

Seiyun plays a pivotal role in the balance of power in eastern Yemen, with developments there potentially impacting political and security equations across southern Yemen. The region has become an arena for intense competition between Saudi Arabia and the UAE for political and military influence in recent years.

The UAE has strengthened its presence in Hadhramaut and Al-Mahra through its support for the Southern Transitional Council. This rivalry has led to periodic tensions and confrontations between the two Gulf powers, further complicating efforts to achieve stability and a political solution to Yemen’s crisis.
