Venezuela Declares Week of Mourning for Victims of US Military Attack

Venezuela has announced a seven-day national mourning period for those killed in a US military operation targeting President Nicolas Maduro, with casualties reported among both civilians and military personnel.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Venezuela‘s Vice President Delcy Rodriguez declared a week of national mourning for the “young men, women, and men who sacrificed their lives defending Venezuela and President Nicolas Maduro.” The announcement came during a televised address on Venezuela’s state broadcaster.

Rodriguez expressed profound grief, stating: “We honor them. The images of their bodies wounded my soul, but I know they died for the values of this republic.” The mourning period follows a January 3rd US special forces operation in Caracas that resulted in Maduro’s capture along with his wife.

Maduro currently faces drug trafficking charges in a New York court. Cuban and Venezuelan authorities report 55 combined military fatalities from the attack, while Venezuela’s Attorney General Tarek William Saab cited “dozens” of civilian and military deaths. Unconfirmed estimates place civilian casualties between 70-80.
