Uruguay Takes Firm Diplomatic Stance on Venezuela Amid US Intervention

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Uruguay has adopted a firm diplomatic stance in response to recent developments in Venezuela, where the US intervened to detain the country’s legitimate president, Nicolás Maduro. President Yamandú Orsi and Uruguay’s Ministry of Foreign Relations issued an official statement expressing deep concern over unilateral military operations on Venezuelan soil.
Uruguay’s position, rooted in its historical stance dating back to 1965 during the invasion of the Dominican Republic, rejects military intervention as a means to resolve political disputes. The government emphasizes that internal crises should be addressed through peaceful solutions and international law.
International analysts warn that Uruguay’s independent stance may come with economic costs. While some regional countries might align with the US approach, Uruguay’s adherence to traditional principles could hinder short-term access to preferential trade agreements. Analysts suggest that in today’s bipolar world, alignment with major economic powers is often seen as a prerequisite for enhancing competitiveness, and divergence could place Uruguay at a disadvantage in attracting investments compared to its neighbors.
Despite these warnings, the Orsi administration has chosen to coordinate its positions with countries like Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico. This bloc advocates for a return to negotiations and the avoidance of dangerous military interventions in Latin America. Domestically, while a broad front supports the president’s decision, some opposition factions argue that the government must strike a finer balance between defending international principles and safeguarding national economic interests to protect export sectors and trade positions.
