France Reaffirms Support for Denmark Over Greenland Sovereignty Amid US Interest

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has reiterated France’s support for Denmark’s stance that Greenland is not for sale, following renewed US interest in acquiring the strategic island.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has firmly stated that Greenland is not negotiable or for sale, reinforcing France‘s solidarity with Danish and Greenlandic authorities. Barrot’s remarks came in response to recent comments by US officials regarding Greenland’s strategic importance.

Barrot emphasized that intimidation tactics must cease, assuring Denmark of European solidarity. His statement follows Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s recent assertion that Greenland’s sovereignty is non-negotiable.

The diplomatic tension arises as US President Donald Trump has revived discussions about acquiring Greenland, an idea first proposed during his initial presidency in 2019. Trump claims the island holds key military strategic value and alleges insufficient Danish protection efforts.

The White House recently confirmed Trump is exploring options to obtain Greenland, including potential military force deployment. This move signals a revival of his ambitions to control the strategically located island despite European opposition.
