European Leaders Warn Trump’s Tariffs Undermine Transatlantic Relations

European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have jointly criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs, stating they weaken transatlantic ties and risk further deterioration in relations.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, European leaders have issued a stark warning over the impact of U.S. tariffs on transatlantic relations. In a joint statement on X, European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen asserted that President Donald Trump’s trade policies are damaging the partnership between Europe and the United States.

The two leaders emphasized Europe’s unity and commitment to its sovereignty in their message to Trump. While they denied that recent European military exercises in Greenland were directed against the U.S., they affirmed the European Union’s solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland.

Costa and von der Leyen stressed the importance of continued consultations between Denmark and the U.S. regarding Greenland, where tensions have risen following American expressions of interest in acquiring the territory. The autonomous region’s government and population have opposed any potential annexation.

This latest dispute follows previous strains in EU-U.S. relations caused by Trump’s Ukraine peace proposal, which European officials viewed as favoring Russian interests. Greenland remains part of Denmark’s territorial domain, a NATO member state.
