Russia Condemns U.S. Pressure on Cuba as Blatant Violation of International Law

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has strongly condemned the United States’ reported plans to escalate pressure on Cuba, describing the move as a blatant violation of international law. Speaking on Wednesday, Zakharova expressed hope that “common sense will prevail in Washington” and dismissed rumors of further U.S. sanctions against Havana as baseless.
Zakharova raised concerns over media reports suggesting the U.S. might add Cuba to its list of “State Sponsors of Terrorism,” calling such measures deeply troubling. She emphasized that Washington appears willing to employ any means necessary to tighten its decades-long embargo on the Caribbean nation.
The statement comes after U.S. President Donald Trump made controversial remarks at the Iowa economic forum, asserting that Cuba faces a “serious crisis” and risks collapse if it fails to rebuild itself. Trump also highlighted Washington’s growing influence in Venezuela, claiming economic cooperation with Caracas would be “more profitable than ever.”
Meanwhile, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has framed recent military exercises as a deterrent against potential U.S. aggression. In a televised address, Díaz-Canel stated that the best way to prevent an attack is to make “imperialism calculate the cost” of military action against Cuba, underscoring the importance of the nation’s defensive preparedness.
