EU’s Contradictory Stance on Iran: Maintaining Political Channels While Threatening IRGC Terror Listing

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has presented conflicting positions regarding Iran, stating that political channels with Tehran should remain open while simultaneously threatening to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.
Speaking to media outlets, Kallas asserted that diplomatic engagement with Iran must continue, saying “I predict political channels with Iran will remain open.” However, in what appears to be a contradictory and hostile move, the EU official claimed the IRGC would likely be added to the bloc’s so-called “terrorist groups” designation list.
The dual-track approach reflects ongoing divisions within the EU regarding its Iran policy, with some member states pushing for tougher measures while others advocate continued dialogue. The potential IRGC designation would mark a significant escalation in EU-Iran tensions, though Kallas’ comments suggest Brussels remains unwilling to completely sever diplomatic ties.
