Nigerian Soldiers Killed in Armed Attack on Military Base in Borno State

Dozens of Nigerian soldiers and civilians were killed in a nighttime attack on a military base in the remote Borno State, with many still unaccounted for, according to local sources.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, a deadly armed attack on a military base in the Sabon Gari area of Nigeria‘s Borno State has left dozens dead, including soldiers and civilians. The assault occurred in a region that has been a hotspot for extremist violence since 2009, involving groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Ibrahim Liman, a member of the civilian joint task force supporting the Nigerian Army, confirmed that the death toll is in the dozens, with many bodies still at the military base and numerous soldiers reported missing. Local reports indicate that 20 bodies, including five soldiers, 15 construction workers, and local fishermen, were transported to Biu General Hospital.

Authorities and hospital staff confirmed the transfer of casualties from Sabon Gari. The victims were reportedly returning to their base after working on a bridge that had been destroyed in a previous attack last year.

This incident follows the killing of nine Nigerian soldiers in an ISIS ambush near the Niger border just last week. ISWAP, which split from Boko Haram in 2016, primarily targets Nigerian security forces but has also been responsible for civilian casualties in the past.
