Sudan Army Thwarts Drone Attacks on El Obeid Amid Escalating Humanitarian Crisis

Sudan’s military has successfully intercepted drone strikes targeting El Obeid in North Kordofan, as UNICEF warns the country now faces the world’s largest internal displacement crisis with 9.5 million uprooted.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Sudan’s air defense systems repelled drone attacks aimed at military positions in El Obeid, the strategic capital of North Kordofan state. Military sources confirmed the interception occurred amid ongoing clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and paramilitary groups.

The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reports 9.5 million Sudanese have been displaced across 18 states, with children disproportionately affected by conflict-induced hunger and disease. Since the war began in April 2023, total displacements have reached 12.5 million people including refugees.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced new sanctions against both the Rapid Support Forces and Sudanese Army, citing their roles in prolonging the humanitarian catastrophe. The measures come as aerial warfare intensifies, with both sides increasingly deploying drone technology.
