Iraqi Parliament Sets Date for Presidential Election Session After Previous Delay

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the Iraqi Parliament has scheduled a new session to elect the president after an earlier meeting failed to reach a quorum. The initial session, held on Sunday, January 17, was postponed as only 85 out of the required number of lawmakers attended.
Sources suggest the delay may be linked to pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, which has reportedly sought to prevent the election of a president favored by the Iraqi people. Tom Barrack, an envoy of President Trump, made interventionist remarks advocating for the formation of a government in Iraq that collaborates with neighboring countries and the West.
Barrack described such cooperation as key to regional stability and prosperity and revealed details of a phone conversation he had with Masoud Barzani, leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party in Iraq.
