Syria and Lebanon Agree on Prisoner Transfer Deal for Long-Term Inmates

Syria and Lebanon have reached an agreement to transfer long-term prisoners to their respective countries, with Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri confirming the deal aims to repatriate inmates not accused of murder.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Syria and Lebanon have finalized an agreement to repatriate prisoners serving long-term sentences to their home countries. Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri stated that eligible inmates will complete their remaining sentences domestically.

The deal applies to individuals who have spent over a decade in Lebanese prisons, with discussions ongoing since October 2025. The agreement focuses on non-homicide cases and resolving pending judicial matters between the two nations.

Official statistics indicate approximately 2,500 Syrian citizens are currently detained in Lebanese prisons, accounting for nearly one-third of Lebanon’s total inmate population.
