According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the Australian government and the Afghan Embassy in Canberra issued a joint statement confirming the suspension of the embassy’s activities starting June 30, 2026. The Afghan Embassy stated that this outcome was not their desired result but acknowledged an agreement on a dignified transition process.
The Australian government emphasized its commitment, as the host country, to continue protecting the embassy building and its assets in accordance with international laws, including the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
The current staff and ambassador of Afghanistan in Canberra were appointed by the former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s government. Australia has clarified that it does not intend to accept new representatives from the interim Afghan government (Taliban).
