US Special Envoy for Iraq Dismissed Amid Management Concerns

Mark Sawaya, the US Special Envoy for Iraq appointed by President Donald Trump in October, has been removed from his position, with sources citing mismanagement and failure to influence key political developments in Iraq.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Mark Sawaya, appointed as the US Special Envoy for Iraq by President Donald Trump in October, has been dismissed from his role. The exact reasons for his removal remain unclear, but informed sources attribute the decision to his mismanagement of critical issues and inability to prevent Nouri al-Maliki from emerging as a leading candidate for Iraq’s future prime ministership.

Tom Barak, the US Ambassador to Turkey, is likely to assume responsibility for Iraq-related matters. Neither the US State Department nor the White House has provided an official explanation for Sawaya’s dismissal.

Sawaya, who previously managed a cannabis-related business, was an unexpected choice for the diplomatic role due to his lack of prior experience in diplomacy. Notably, he had not undertaken any official visits to Iraq since his appointment.
