UN Secretary-General Warns of Dangerous Consequences as New START Treaty Expires

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has labeled the expiration of the New START treaty as a threat to global strategic stability, urging the US and Russia to return to negotiations immediately.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a stark warning about the expiration of the New START treaty, calling it a dangerous development for global strategic stability. Guterres emphasized the urgent need for Washington and Moscow to return to the negotiating table and establish a replacement framework for the treaty.

The New START treaty, signed in 2010, was designed to control and reduce nuclear arsenals between the United States and Russia. Under the agreement, both nations were required to limit their nuclear stockpiles to a maximum of 1,550 warheads each. The treaty’s expiration has raised concerns about a potential arms race and heightened geopolitical tensions.
