Iraqi Analyst Warns Against Instability Caused by Transfer of Foreign Terrorists from Syria

An Iraqi security analyst has highlighted the serious threat posed to national stability by the presence of repatriated foreign fighters, especially following Turkey’s refusal to accept citizens involved in terrorism. This development raises significant questions regarding international cooperation in managing the return of convicted extremist elements.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Hussein Al-Ibrahimi, an Iraqi security affairs analyst, stated that Turkey recently objected to the repatriation of 165 terrorists holding Turkish nationality. This specific refusal prompts crucial inquiries into the degree of cooperation offered by other regional nations regarding the acceptance of extremist elements currently detained in Iraq.

Al-Ibrahimi characterized the potential presence of terrorist operatives within Iraqi society after they complete their sentences as a direct and substantial hazard to the nation’s security and stability. He emphasized that Iraq urgently requires robust international collaboration, alongside the issuance of definitive judicial rulings against these individuals, to effectively block any possibility of their return to terrorist activities.

Earlier reports from Iraqi judicial sources detailed the scale of this issue. Ahmed Al-Laibi, spokesperson for the Iraqi Ministry of Justice, previously announced that the total number of ISIS detainees transferred from Syria to Iraq stood at 5,703 individuals originating from 61 different countries. Of this total, 4,253 detainees were Arab nationals, and 983 were non-Arab. Specifically concerning the regional makeup, the figures indicated that 467 of the transferred detainees were Iraqi citizens, while 3,543 were Syrian nationals.
