Russia-US-Ukraine Truce Talks in Geneva Deemed Difficult

The tripartite negotiations between Russia, the United States, and Ukraine in Geneva have been described as challenging but professional, with a follow-up round of peace talks expected soon. Despite multiple negotiation sessions, territorial disputes remain the primary obstacle to a resolution between Russia and Ukraine.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the head of the Russian delegation in the Geneva talks, Vladimir Medinsky, stated after the conclusion of the negotiations that the discussions were difficult but professional and business-like. He added that the next round of Ukraine peace talks will be held soon. The third round of these negotiations, attended by representatives from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States, took place in Geneva, the capital of Switzerland, on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Despite several rounds of negotiations, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues. Territorial issues remain the main obstacle to reaching an agreement between the two sides. Both Russia and Ukraine are striving to gain the initiative, both on the battlefield and at the negotiating table, by maintaining and expanding the territories under their control.

Previously, Matthew Whitaker, the U.S. Permanent Representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), had stated that Washington expects the issue of territorial disputes to be resolved in the coming days and weeks. He also mentioned that participants in the negotiation process for resolving the Ukraine crisis are currently working on four final documents, which include a 20-point peace plan, a set of multilateral security guarantees, specific U.S. security guarantees, and a plan for economic growth and prosperity post-peace.
