Russia Warns of Retaliation Over Potential Nuclear Weapons Deployment in Estonia

The Kremlin has issued a stern warning that Russia will respond with reciprocal measures should Estonia proceed with hosting nuclear weapons, emphasizing Moscow’s commitment to ensuring its own security.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the Kremlin, has issued a warning in response to the possibility of nuclear weapons being deployed in Estonia. Peskov stated that Russia poses no threat to Estonia or any other European country, but stressed that if such armaments are stationed in Estonia, Russia will retaliate with reciprocal action.

Peskov further noted that Moscow will always take all necessary measures to guarantee its security, particularly concerning nuclear deterrence.

Relations between Estonia and Russia have been largely tense and marked by distrust over the past three decades. Following Estonia’s independence in 1991 and the collapse of the Soviet Union, issues such as border disputes, the status of the Russian-speaking minority in Estonia, and historical interpretations of the Soviet occupation period have been central points of tension between the two nations.

With Estonia’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union in 2004, the geopolitical distance between Tallinn and Moscow widened. Particularly after the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014 and the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in 2022, Estonia has been among Kyiv’s staunchest supporters in Europe, consistently advocating for stricter sanctions against Moscow.
