Canada Pledges Aid to Cuba Amid Intensified U.S. Sanctions

Canada is preparing to send aid to Cuba as the United States intensifies its sanctions against Havana, with Ottawa signaling its intent to provide assistance during the Caribbean nation’s current challenges. The move follows similar offers of support from Mexico and Russia.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Canada has announced its readiness to assist Cuba amidst escalating sanctions from the United States. Anita Anand, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated that the Canadian government intends to send aid to Cuba, though specific details of the assistance plan were not immediately provided.

Tourism is a vital sector for Cuba’s economy, and Canada represents the second-largest source of foreign direct investment in Havana, particularly in the mining and tourism industries. The intensified U.S. sanctions have led to shortages of fuel and food supplies in Cuba.

Prior to Canada’s announcement, both Mexico and Russia had also expressed their willingness to offer aid to Cuba. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak indicated that Moscow is working to provide assistance to Cuba amid its fuel crisis. Earlier in February, Russia’s Ambassador to Havana, Viktor Koronelli, told RIA Novosti that Russia would continue to supply Cuba with oil.
