UN Security Council Imposes Sanctions on Senior Sudanese Rapid Support Forces Commanders

The United Nations Security Council’s Sanctions Committee on Sudan has added four senior commanders of the country’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to its sanctions list, implementing measures including travel bans and asset freezes.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the United Nations Security Council’s Sanctions Committee on Sudan has added four senior commanders of the country’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to its sanctions list. This action was taken on Tuesday, following a proposal submitted on February 17th.

These commanders are subject to measures such as travel bans and asset freezes under the sanctions regime established by Security Council Resolution 1591, aimed at preventing the escalation of violence in Sudan.

Among those sanctioned is Abdelrahim Hamdan Dagalo, the Deputy Commander of the RSF and brother of Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo. Also included are Gido Hamdan Ahmed, RSF Commander in North Darfur, and Fatih Abdullah Idris, known as “Abu Lulu,” along with Tijani Ibrahim Musa Mohamed, known as “Al-Zair Salem.”

This decision comes as international pressure mounts on the leadership of the RSF, amidst the ongoing conflict in Sudan now entering its third year. The war has displaced millions of civilians and pushed parts of the country to the brink of famine.

The sanctions regime, established in 2005 under Resolution 1591, includes an arms embargo on groups operating in Darfur. A committee composed of all Security Council members oversees its implementation, including ensuring member states freeze assets and enforce travel bans on designated individuals and entities.

The addition of these four commanders follows the previous designation of other senior RSF figures. In November 2024, Osman Mohamed Hamed and Abdel Rahman Juma Barkalla were sanctioned. The Sanctions Committee has prepared and published a report detailing the reasons for these new designations, updating the Security Council’s consolidated list.

These sanctions have been imposed following repeated calls from the UN and international human rights organizations for accountability for the atrocities of the war, particularly in Darfur. The action was taken following a joint proposal by the United States, the United Kingdom, and France.
