The U.S. Senate on Saturday confirmed Todd Blanche as the new Attorney General, bringing an end to a highly contested cabinet nomination during President Donald Trump’s second term. The confirmation vote, which concluded after weeks of intense debate, saw Blanche approved with a narrow margin of 50 to 49.

Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski of the Republican party voted against Blanche’s confirmation. The deciding vote came from Senator Bill Cassidy, who announced his support on Friday, stating his belief that Blanche was the most suitable candidate presented by President Trump.

This vote marks the end of a multi-week impasse between Senate Republicans and the Trump administration concerning Blanche. He had been serving as acting Attorney General since April and previously held the second-highest position at the Department of Justice.

Republican senators had voiced concerns regarding Blanche’s handling of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein and his role in establishing Trump’s $1.8 billion “disarmament” fund, along with the associated tax immunity agreement for the President and his family.

Some Republicans acknowledged that Blanche, who has nearly a decade of experience as a prosecutor in New York, was likely the most palatable nominee President Trump could have put forward. Blanche has a documented history of representing Trump as his attorney, including in the case concerning hush-money payments related to an alleged extramarital affair.
