Russia Predicts EU Regret Over Gas Cutoffs, Cites Global Demand
According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko has indicated that the European Union will come to regret its decision to cut off Russian gas supplies, predicting that the bloc will soon understand the challenges of its energy situation without Russian resources.
Grushko emphasized the substantial global demand for natural gas and Russia’s success in maintaining strong commercial relationships with many countries. He noted that the EU’s reliance on Russian gas has significantly decreased since the conflict in Ukraine began in 2022, dropping from approximately 45% of total imports in 2021 to 12% by 2025. Despite this reduction, some European nations continue to import Russian pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The European Union has legislated a phased withdrawal from Russian gas, with imports of Russian LNG slated for complete cessation by the end of 2026. Pipeline gas imports are scheduled to be prohibited by September 30, 2027, though exceptional circumstances may allow for brief extensions for specific countries. Following November 1, 2027, all Russian gas imports will be forbidden.
The move to curtail gas imports from Russia has already contributed to increased energy prices in Europe, fueling inflation and hindering economic growth across the continent.
