France Detains Over 6,000 Amidst Student Protests, Hundreds of Schools Remain Closed

French authorities have arrested more than 6,000 individuals since the onset of widespread student protests, with hundreds of secondary schools continuing to face partial or full closures due to ongoing unrest.

According to the International Desk of Webangah News Agency, the French newspaper Le Figaro has reported that over 6,000 people have been detained across France since the beginning of student demonstrations. The report cites data published by the Mehr News Agency, quoting from the Russia Al-Youm network.

The French Minister of National Education announced on Sunday, amidst the continuation of student protests nationwide, that between 400 and 500 secondary schools will remain partially or fully closed. This comes after a week of clashes between riot police and high school students, which coincided with the expansion of broader protests concerning classroom conditions.

Édouard Geoffroy, the French Minister of National Education, stated that due to these disturbances, the conduct of classes will be “completely or partially suspended.”

The protests by French students began approximately ten days ago in schools in the suburbs of Paris. The initial concerns centered on improving educational conditions, teacher shortages, and overcrowded classrooms. The movement rapidly escalated into a nationwide wave, which has now taken on new dimensions with the closure of hundreds of schools, the involvement of university students and teachers, and violent confrontations with police.
