“Boris Pistorius”, the German defense minister. He has warned about the consequences of such a scenario for the relations between the two sides of the Atlantic.
“Boris Pistorius”, the Federal Minister of Defense of Germany, in part of his speech regarding the wide consequences for interaction America warned in Europe if Donald Trump returns to the White House. Speaking in Berlin, Pistorius said that this would be “a disaster”. It will be significantly better. At the same time, he said: “But even in the era of Biden, it is predictable that the United States will focus more on the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
During his first term as president, Trump had difficult relations with NATO’s European partners. At first, he even described the NATO military alliance as “obsolete”. Later, he regularly criticized the Europeans for insufficient defense spending, accusing Germany in particular of allowing NATO to be protected against Russia at the expense of the United States.
“Pistorius” stated that with regard to greater defense cooperation among Europeans, this should also focus on creating compatible systems. According to him, one lesson from the war in Ukraine is that there should not be too many different types of weapon systems. He added: “If we have to fight together in the eastern flank in an emergency situation, we cannot bear it.” According to him, the European Air Defense Initiative (ESI) by German chancellor Olaf Schultz also revealed that there is no weapon system in Europe to defend against long-range missiles. That’s why Germany ordered Israel’s Aero 3 system.
Pistorius admitted that this led to dissatisfaction with France. “Emmanuel Macron”, the French president, was of the opinion that there is enough time to develop such a system in Europe, because there is no acute threat. “That assessment can be debated,” Pistorius said. We say we are at least under threat enough that we can’t wait ten years to develop something.
