Canada may face problems from NATO over costs
Politico wrote: NATO member countries may put pressure on Canada at the upcoming summit of this organization this week due to the country’s non-compliance with the obligations of this military bloc in the last 10 years.
According to this report, in the past few years, among the 32 members of this foreign alliance, Ottawa could not meet the required domestic military expenses and did not obtain the necessary indicators to finance new equipment. Canada also has no plans to meet those targets.
This position has caused displeasure to other NATO members, so the member countries of this bloc intend to put pressure on Canada and demand the allocation of funds for the expenses needed by NATO.
The publication notes that the problem is getting worse every year because Ottawa stubbornly does not increase defense spending as much as it should.
In 2014, Canada signed a pledge to spend 2 percent of GDP on the bloc, but has since broken its promise. Belgium is another country that has not met the necessary expenses for NATO and promises to correct this situation by 2035. But Canada refuses to give a date in this case.
The NATO summit will be held in Washington from July 9 to 11, and its time coincides with the 75th anniversary of the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty in 1949.
