Ethiopia’s Prime Minister visited Sudan in an effort to “establish stability”.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed met with Sudanese army commander Abdul Fattah al-Barhan. He is the first foreign official to meet Al Burhan since the war between the army and the Sudan Rapid Support Forces.
According to Reuters, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, who previously had closer positions towards the rapid support forces and in December also hosted “Mohammed Hamdan Daghlo”, the head of the commander of these forces in “Addis Ababa”, today’s (Tuesday) meeting was part of trying to establish stability in Sudan.
The war between Sudan’s military factions has forced almost 10 million people to leave their homes and created famine-like conditions in parts of the country. While the Rapid Support Forces are in control of most of the capital, central and western Sudan, the country’s army has taken control of the eastern and northern states, including Port Sudan.
It is worth noting that last year’s negotiations hosted by Saudi Arabia to establish a ceasefire between the two sides failed, and efforts to bring them back to the negotiating table have not yielded results to date.
