Hungary’s intransigence in the Ukraine issue is a challenge for the European Union
Despite the efforts of the European authorities to get closer to Hungary in order to avoid the disaster of failure in the upcoming summit meeting, especially on the issue of Ukraine, Hungary still insists on its opposition to the annexation and the continuation of support for Ukraine. |
According to the international group Tasnim News Agency, the newspaper “Zurich Zeitong” wrote in an article: European politicians are trying to get closer to Hungary to avoid a disaster at the EU summit. At the same time, Hungary sends geopolitical signals with all stubbornness in different directions.
Victor Orbán, the prime minister of Hungary, with instinctive and stubborn policies unlike anyone else, on the ability and weight of the small government. It adds itself to the international scene. For years, the Hungarian Prime Minister has consistently used the principle of consensus in the EU to gain maximum advantage. Now he has threatened to derail aid to Ukraine and the start of accession talks.
To avoid this last-minute scenario, which would be catastrophic in terms of external influence, top European politicians are now They are desperately trying to get close to Orban. “Charles Michel”, the President of the Council of the European Union, was recently in Budapest, and last Thursday, Macron received this Hungarian official in Paris. Now even Vladimir Zelensky has knocked on Orban’s door and started bilateral negotiations with him.
But Budapest has not given up yet. In this regard, the government pointed out the fundamental considerations about Kiev and announced that Ukraine is “light years” away from being ready for membership, and that the European Union is betraying its principles by starting negotiations without meeting all the prerequisites.
Strategists of this country are of the opinion that the dominance of the West will gradually disappear in the medium term and Hungary should place itself in a global region where various great powers are competing for influence. Therefore, good relations with Russia and China, despite the anchoring of Hungary in the European Union and NATO, is part of the reason for the existence of this country. Partners are for the Hungarian economy. Budapest pleases these investors with attractive terms and fast procedures that are concentrated in the hands of the ruling party. But Hungary needs cheap and abundant energy to realize its big industrial ambitions. In this sensitive sector, dependence on Moscow is very high. Therefore, Orban is not interested in strongly supporting Ukraine.
This opportunistic period has other advantages for Orban. Although he supports most sanctions against Russia, he describes them as suicidal for the European economy and is negotiating an exception for Hungary. At the same time, with positions that often resemble those of Moscow, he distinguishes himself as a fighter against the mainstream media, which parts of the Western right and left consider too pro-Ukrainian and militaristic. /p>
German NTV continued to write: From February 2022, the Hungarian Prime Minister, who is well aware of real politics, expects that war fatigue will spread in the West sooner or later. This has become more evident in recent months with the failure of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, the domestic political conflict in the United States, and the conflicts between East Central Europe and Ukraine over grain and truck drivers. He sells to his voters as the pure outcome of Western Ukraine politics. Therefore, in polls, Hungarians consistently speak of a policy of non-intervention in the Ukrainian war, and the majority of them reject sanctions against Moscow. On the other hand, Russia is considered a threat, but a relatively small one, among Hungarians.
