South Korean Prosecutors Indict Former president on Bribery Charges
The South Korean prosecution has issued an indictment against former President Moon Jae-in on charges of bribery.
According to the English section of Webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Anadolu, the prosecution office in Jeonju, South Korea, announced the indictment against Moon Jae-in for alleged bribery. The former president has been accused of violating the Special Crimes Act. Additionally, lee Sang-jik, a former lawmaker and founder of a Korean airline, has also been indicted on charges of bribery and embezzlement.
Yonhap reports that charges against Moon’s daughter and son-in-law have been suspended.
Moon Jae-in, 72, served as South Korea’s president from 2017 to 2022.The allegations come as the country remains embroiled in its worst political crisis in decades following an abortive military coup attempt in December 2024.
After the short-lived six-hour martial law declaration, former President Yoon Suk-yeol was impeached and later removed from office by a constitutional court ruling. He is currently on trial for rebellion against the state.
Acting prime Minister Han Duck-soo is currently serving as interim president until early elections scheduled for June 3 (Khordad 13).
