South Korean Prosecutors Indict Former President for Abuse of Power
According to the English section of “webangah News Agency“, citing Mehr News Agency and al Jazeera, south Korean prosecutors have indicted Yoon Suk-yeol, the country’s ousted former president, on charges of abuse of power.
Yonhap reports that the indictment was issued without an arrest warrant. The ex-president, already facing serious rebellion charges following his impeachment and removal from office, now finds himself in deeper legal turmoil wiht this new indictment.in December 2024, Yoon unexpectedly declared martial law in South Korea. Following this order, armed forces were deployed to the National Assembly—but the martial law lasted only six hours before being overturned by opposition lawmakers. Parliament subsequently impeached Yoon Suk-yeol.
In April, South Korea’s Constitutional Court stripped the 64-year-old Yoon of all presidential powers and authority. Prosecutors had initially indicted him in January while he was still in office on charges of leading a rebellion, an offense not covered by presidential immunity protections.
The new charges against Yoon emerged as investigators raided his private residence yesterday (Wednesday) in connection with bribery allegations involving his wife Kim Keon-hee and a pastor accused of accepting expensive gifts on her behalf.
If convicted of rebellion, Yoon could face life imprisonment or even execution. He is the second president in South Korea’s history to be removed from office and the third to be impeached.
With Yoon’s ouster, early elections are scheduled for June 3.
