European Union supports diplomacy on Iran nuclear issue
EU Foreign Policy Chief Reaffirms Bloc’s Support for Diplomacy on Iran Nuclear Issue
According to the English section of the Webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency, Kaja kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, stated that the bloc supports diplomacy regarding Iran’s nuclear issue.
In a post on social media platform X, Kallas wrote: “To emphasize the EU’s support for diplomacy on Iran’s nuclear issue and de-escalation in the region, I spoke with Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister.”
She repeated unsubstantiated claims by the EU regarding Iran’s military support for Russia, adding: “I urged Iran to halt military assistance to Russia and raised concerns about detained European citizens and human rights. EU-Iran relations depend on progress across all areas.”
Kallas’ remarks come as indirect negotiations between Tehran and Washington over Iran’s nuclear program began in late Farvardin (early April).
The first round of indirect talks was held on 23 Farvardin (12 April) in Muscat, followed by a second round on 30 Farvardin (19 April) in Rome, Italy. A third round took place on 6 Ordibehesht (26 April) in Oman, attended by U.S.Special envoy Stephen Whitcomb and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, aimed at reaching a nuclear agreement with Tehran.
A fourth round was scheduled for this Saturday but was postponed due to logistical issues. Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi announced via X: “We are rescheduling logistical arrangements for talks between Iran and America—originally set for Saturday in Rome—with new dates to follow.”
News outlet Axios reported that Iranian and American negotiators may proceed with a fourth round later this week.
