U.S. Commerce Secretary Says Full Lifting of Tariffs on China Unlikely After Ongoing Talks
The U.S. Commerce Secretary under former President Donald Trump, Howard Lutnick, stated that a complete removal of tariffs at the end of ongoing negotiations between the U.S. and China is unlikely.Lutnick responded to a related question by saying: “Not at all. Washington and Beijing need dozens of meetings, and first, they must de-escalate tensions.”
White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt said yesterday that Trump remains committed to his stance and will not unilaterally lift tariffs against China.
yesterday, Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social: “It seems 80% of tariffs on China are correct,” while adding that “it depends on Scott Bassett, the U.S. Treasury Secretary!”
The U.S. president had previously stated that Washington would reduce tariffs on Chinese goods as or else, developing trade relations between the two countries would not be possible.
The first round of talks between Washington and Beijing regarding customs duties and the trade war began hours ago in Geneva, Switzerland. Currently, the U.S imposes 145% tariffs on China, while Beijing has set 125% customs duties on American goods.
