Russia Has Coal Reserves Sufficient for Over 500 Years, Says Deputy PM Novak
Russia possesses coal reserves that can last for more than 500 years, according to Alexander Novak, the country’s Deputy Prime Minister.In an article, Novak stated that the growth of new coal extraction hubs by 2050 could increase production capacity to 250 million tons. He emphasized that safe and environmentally friendly mining remains a top priority.
Novak added that by 2050, the industry will consist of companies equipped with advanced and modern technologies operating under strict environmental standards.
Ensuring Russia’s Energy Independence with 100 Years of Coal Reserves
The installed capacity of coal-fired power plants in Siberia and the Far East is expected to reach approximately 38 gigawatts. Additionally, plans are underway to introduce clean coal technologies and innovative extraction methods to develop a wide range of coal-based products and waste utilization while expanding the coal chemical industry.
Under Russia’s energy strategy through 2050:
- Coal production targets are set at 530.1 million tons by 2030
- Production is projected to reach 662 million tons by 2050 (compared to 443.5 million tons in 2024)
Novak stressed that coal remains a foundational industry for multiple regions and the entire national economy. He highlighted Russia’s vast resources and full potential for efficient extraction and utilization—ensuring stable domestic supply while expanding exports.
