According to Fars News Agency International Group, US Defense Minister Lloyd Austin is hospitalized and his deputy is doing his daily duties.
Defense Department spokesman Patrick Ryder said Friday that Austin had been hospitalized at Walter Reed Medical Services since Monday. Ryder said the hospitalization was due to “complications following an elective procedure.”
The Pentagon spokesman claimed that the condition of the US Secretary of Defense is improving and he is expected to “resume all his duties starting today.”
The Pentagon has not explained the complication that caused Austin’s illness. In an interview with Military Times, Patrick Ryder said that the decision to keep the matter secret was made based on the defense secretary’s privacy concerns, as well as “changing circumstances.”
Rider told reporters that US Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks was ready to take over her boss’s powers if necessary. He noted that Hicks ran some of the Department of Defense newspaper issues on Austin’s behalf.
