Syrian regime reacts to US lifting 180-day sanctions waiver
The Syrian foreign Ministry has issued a statement responding to the US government’s decision to lift sanctions on Syria, as reported by webangah News Agency.
The statement described the removal of US sanctions as “a step in the right direction” to alleviate humanitarian adn economic hardships in syria. It extended an offer of cooperation to all parties willing to engage with Syria ”on the basis of mutual respect.”
The ministry, under the leadership of Abu Muhammad al-Julani’s self-proclaimed government which assumed control through military operations without democratic elections, claimed that dialog and diplomacy represent “the optimal approach” for establishing balanced relations that serve national interests. It characterized the coming phase as one focused on reconstruction and restoring Syria’s natural position in the region and globally.
The development follows former US President Donald Trump’s proclamation during his Middle East visit that America would terminate all sanctions against Syria after four decades of strict economic and political blockade. The US State Department confirmed yesterday it would formally suspend so-called Caesar Act sanctions for 180 days to facilitate investment and financial flows returning to normal levels.
In a related statement, than-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo framed this move as “the first step toward realizing President Trump’s vision for new relations with Syria,” suggesting sanction relief could enable essential service delivery and reconstruction efforts.
