Spanish PM Calls for Suspension of Cooperation Agreement with Tel Aviv
Spanish Prime Minister pedro Sánchez has called on Europe to immediately suspend its cooperation agreement with Israel, according to a report by webangah News Agency.
“Europe must take action against Israel’s human rights violations,” Sánchez stated in his anti-zionist remarks.
The Spanish leader criticized Europe’s “double standards,” asserting that the continent lacks the political will to suspend its partnership agreement with israel.
“It makes no sense to impose seventeen sanction packages against Russia while taking no action against Israel,” Sánchez emphasized.
The EU-Israel Association Agreement, which came into force in 2000,serves as the main framework for political and economic cooperation between the parties.
The agreement serves as a key political and cultural bridge between the two parties. However, its second clause stipulates that full implementation depends on adherence to democratic principles and human rights by both sides-a provision now under review due to Tel Aviv’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank.
In recent months, several EU member states-including Ireland, Spain, Belgium, and Slovenia-have called for the immediate suspension or revision of this agreement. During the latest EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, the Netherlands formally triggered Article 2’s review mechanism, a move backed by widespread diplomatic support.
